Unirgy Giftcert and OneStepCheckout are popular Magento extensions which I recently had to get working together on a client site.

Unirgy Giftcert is a free Magento extension for selling, redeeming, and managing gift certificates for your online store.

OneStepCheckout is a paid Magento extension that simplifies the checkout process, placing all of the checkout data elements on one screen. The extension is easy to install and easy to configure, and has been a hit with my clients.

The problem was getting OSC to recognize and apply gift certificate codes. If a valid gift certificate code was entered, after hitting Apply Coupon, an error was not generated, but the gift certificate amount was not reflected in the order grand total. After a few emails with OSC support, they let me know that OSC does not support the Unirgy Giftcert extension. Bummer, yes, but a reasonable work-around was suggested.

Recommended workaround: Disable the coupon code box on the OneStepCheckout screen and require users to enter coupons and gift certificates on the Cart screen. On the OSC checkout screen, I inserted a link below the Order Summary that reads “Click here to apply a gift certificate or coupon code”. The link takes the user to the View Cart page (/checkout/cart) where they can apply any discount codes. Then, upon clicking Proceed to Checkout, the Order Summary in OSC will now reflect the total order amount, minus any gift certificates and coupons.
